Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
Great! I'll think of every use I can for it. It would be cool to have theme music here on the site for sure. The only problem it actually caused was the site wanting to run an add-on but I guess thats no big deal.
The other problems I was having was with Adobe I believe and I think I have that fixed now.

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
Aw dang it Span!
I just wonder though why an orchestral soundtrack would take more space then an 8 or 16 bit track of the same size.
By my reckoning, they are the same size sound-files. Because if they are only mp3, which is only the recorded sound from the source, it should in theory, be the same size. Let me see, I have an 8 bit and a orchestral score that is the same file on my computer, wait a second. . .
Well, if I'll be. . . It does depend on whether if it's orchestral or 8-bit. . . But, I also found a loophole. Loris, you could still compose for us!
I also determined that the length of the song matters and a high quality orchestral song that's 1 minute long, is about equal in size to an 8 or 16-bit soundtrack that's around 4 or 5 minutes. And you did say that you made them with the intention to be looped, right?
I've looked into some other RPG game soundtracks, and not surprisingly, the main themes are the longest (Main title/main travel area) while the other locations had shorter soundtracks. For example, look at this battle theme for a Korean MMORPG called Aika Online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O95mSqmZ6bk
There are longer versions available of this and the other soundtracks, but this version that I'm showing you is used in the game. And if you look, the soundtracks (This is for a 3D game, so you'd have to go a bit smaller) are usually only 2 minutes and under. So, lets say we kept Loris' current soundtracks and had him make shorter versions for the rest of the game area. (But if he wants to, he can make longer, more complete versions that we can feature in another location) We can keep our composer, have his soundtracks, and we can work around this programming block.
And besides, if we are forced to use 8 and 16 bit, then I won't be able to use my ambience tracks, since they are pretty realistic in sound, so it wouldn't match.
(Alf, I'll get to work on that Beor Mountain picture and see what I can do. )

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
It isn't a loophole. I know that that the music he composes can be shortened but they will, in almost all cases, be considerable larger than its 8/16-bit counter part. And for this game, space is my biggest priority and since these songs take up a large portion of memory I can't have them in the game unless I play them once in a blue moon.
You have to think about everything that is going to be inside that game other than the music. NPCs will be moving, systems will constantly be checking things that they need to check(ex: Health, Inventory, Saves, etc) and on top of a plethora of checks and combat systems there is an ever looping soundtrack that is almost as big, memory wise, as the game itself. Plus I'm paying for the server so space is an even bigger factor for me

Yep, this thing is going to be effin hard to manage for certain. I once had a doubt but I sent it to hell with all the others, lol. We'll work it out somehow.
Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
@Alf, no soundtrack on the forums!
Oh, great we have a sound engineer. Isn't it easy to convert bit-rates? I mean there are standalone softwares that do that easily. If you want me to do it, I will.
So... how many are we gonna use anyway?
1 for each town?
for Boss fights.
Time of dying.
Guild wars.
Lazing around.
Secret places.
etc. etc.
Oh, Span are the monsters and players gonna make any noises while attacking (with weapons v/s armor)?

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
The most common way of doing that is using plug ins and other applications on a old style gameboy and that somehow converts the song you want into 8-bit form, but I haven't a clue how to go about doing that nor would I want to. I have a program that produces 8-bit sounds as well as a program that can mix and match music so I'll use those two for the music.
I'm not going to give individual monsters/npcs their own noises because of how many I would have to make. A simple battle theme would suffice. And the weapons is probably a no go as well

I have such a program, but I require the MIDI files of the soundtrack in order to convert them. And I don't know if I can get my hands on that. . .

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
Uhm i got an idea!
We could use the MIDI Format for the Soundtracks.
MIDI is the smallest Audio Format i've ever seen in my live and nearly all orchestral instruments exist in the midi lib
EDIT:
Here's the same track as above... just in MIDI
See that Filesizedifference, and you must say: MIDIs doesnt sound bad...

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
So i hope i can Compose Orchestral Soundtracks in the future, just in the MIDI format, the developers (Like Nintendo etc.) did use the midi format for games like Golden Sun etc.
Mostly for Gameboy Advance, Nintendo 64 and Play Station Soundtracks.

I like it as well! You have yet to produce one that sucks, lol.
I hope the MIDI format works for Spaniard, that sounds great!
Man with these soundtracks this game is going to be epic beyond belief.

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
MIDI's can be played by the most media players, so that shouldnt be a problem.

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
Damn...that was fast, lol. Sounds superb....if I could critisize one thing it would be the piano (or whatever that instrument is at the very beginning) at the beginning, it's a bit sharp and irritating to my ear but it doesn't last very long. The rest of the track is great!
Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
You mean the Harp huh?
Broddering Kingdom Finished! *blush*
Its, like before, a edited version of the main theme with more march elements.

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
Haha, yeah, the Harp then. I thought it was either a piano or a harp but since I don't hear harp tones very often I went with piano. Obviously I wasn't sure which is why I added the part about whatever that instrument is, lol.
Anywho, the last one is also a good one..I like.

BYOND doesn't support MIDI, else I would have accepted your previous soundtracks. .wav is what I have to use

Re: Alagaesia Online Soundtrack
WAV FILES?! WHAT?!
Will we ever have this soundtrack done?
I loved the midi files, especially the Beor Mountain soundtrack. . . Speaking of, here's that picture Alf, after a bit of work to get the atmospheric settings right.
Hmm. . . Maybe you could get through this by decreasing the size of the midi files (So they can be looped very easily) and then converting them from there into wav files. I hope that could be a possible solution.
