Blender has its own artists. We MIGHT be able to enlist another's help. Also, several of us might be able to help do the bigger art.

Plus, I have been thinking already that we would have to segment off Alagaesia and release it in segmented updates, so smaller is not necesarily a problem.

Hmm, segments....not bad. If we can work out the networking and hosting of it I think it'll work.

Yeah, just start with one basic area, then build things up from there. And hopefully, we will get to expand out and create our own world in the unknown expanses.

It's not that I won't be able to do it, like Span said about him learning python, I can learn too, and I've used Blender before, so I'll agree to go with it.

Cool! We'll have to wait and see if we're going to be able to network everyone together on the game made this way though before we worry too much with anything else. I'd say thats the final obstacle at this point.

This is a crazy idea and don't get mad about it.But would it be possible to name this something different and be able to make money off of it and maybe buy a server and make something like Runescape or World of Warcraft (those are just examples I am not saying make it like them) but then we can have a great server and be able to have a great network to use.Did that make sense at all?I mean it would still be based on Alagaesia but then we wouldn't have the rights problems.Just a thought I have thought about it a couple of times. Then Span could make a little money for his work and we could buy a host and have a greater game.

There are some reasons why that cannot happen.

1. Span still has to buy server space for the game in the first place in order for the game to be publicized.

2. If we start out with the game pay-to-play only, then we won't get any players.

3. We will get limited players, due to the the fact that not everybody has read the Inheritance cycle.

Those are three reasons.

If this game flourishses, then sometime in the future we could make a membership, which would make it so, if you want to become a Rider, you have to buy the game, and all the staff members and people who were here during development, get free membership. Actually, no, no membership, ads would be enough, and we don't need money, the pure fun of hosting a huge game like that would be a payment itself.

No, I know what you are talking about, and the thought had occured to me. Then we could definantly do whatever we want. No restrictions. And I think the only money we would make would be Adds, but they can be very profitable.

1.We could all pitch in to help Span buy a server until the money comes in after we get a bunch of people.

2.The price wouldn't be very high to begin with maybe 2 or 3 dollars at the most until we have a bunch of players.

3.I don't understand what you mean.If we change the name then they won't know it was from the Inheritance cycle. After awhile we would get more players and if we didn't get a bunch of players then we could go back to something free to use.

What I mean is that, even if it is a different name, would anyone understand Riders, or the cities, or anything? No.

Also, as for the pay-to-play, nobody would want to waste their money on a game they haven't even play, I mean, a mjority of our players will be children, and children will have to get their parents' consent to buy something online, when they see their child hasn't even played the game, or seen how it is, etc. They will not buy the membership

Fodder?Anyways so your saying that the idea I said has crossed your mind.So do you think this could work or not MD?

@Neo
You make some good points but with the cities we would have to change the names up and all or else it would still cause problems. As to the parents having to pay.We could make a video or something that shows actual gameplay. And you don't have to be a member but if you bought a membership then you would of course get extra benefits.

We can't change those names of cities, and the other stuff of Inheritance, that won't make it the project we originally started, and we cannot change our project just for the money. It has to stay Alagaesia Online or it's a no no, unless Span thinks otherwise.

Okay, the key would be using IC as a model. We would need to redo the map, and change names. No Vreal, or AO online. Well, you could keep it AO online. Just come up with a good A name for it. But the structure of the riders and all could be the same. We already have to take license on things to fix compatibility issues.

We can. Map and name changes, and everything else can stay the same. Most of what Paolini uses in his books are not original ideas. Energy is just MP and HP combined, and techniqally, games with MP can still ahve magic that would kill you if you used too much MP, but the game just does not let you.

I wasn't saying do it for the money Neo as in so we make a profit on it.I was saying make money so we can make a better game so it would be good for everyone not for just a couple peoples benefit. And MD is right. And this isn't Alagaesia exactly of course. The game isn't an exact replica of Alagaesia to begin with. But we could make it loosely based on the IC but have it to where we could have a better game for everyone.

If we decide to not make it an IC-based game, we can still base it off of it, we just cant make it obvious. Change some names, change some IC only things (like Urgals and Ra'zac). If we do that, we'll be fine.

I think Span said at one point that he wouldn't do a pay to play game anyway.

Besides this is all speculation thats too far out. A license to publish an online game like that (if thats what it would require)will cost at minimum $2500/year and we can't do that from just the few of us on this forum.

This is what I said to start with, we'll have to find out more info on this thing before we decide to attempt a switch. BYOND is a free hoster and that was it's best attribute for what we need, everything else I saw to make a game requires a paid license and they are rediculous for 3D games.

Now I don't know if there is something rigged up to host free games made with Blender...thats the data we don't have at this point. We need research.

Oh crap, one more problem.
Blender (the current version) doesn't support windows 7 operating system. That'll leave me out in the cold folks. The yhave a beta version 2.5 that will but it's not fully operative at the moment.
At least thats the way I understood what I just read.

Well, what about the compatibility option with WIN7? You could set it to Windows XP.
